Make a joyful noise!
First Lutheran Church has always been known for its robust music program. Several professional musicians who are members of the church will often add their talents in the form of special music, both instrumentally and vocally. In addition to offering their musical talent at FLC, members are also active in the Heartland Men’s Chorus, The Kansas City Women’s Chorus, The Kansas City Chorale, and a wide variety of jazz, blues, and rock and roll bands and venues through out the region.
FLC has been providing jazz and contemporary worship services for its members and the community since the late 1990s. Among the notables who have participated in the service are Amaad Aladeen, Ray DeMarchi, Brian Ruskin, Harold Steinhardt, Tom DeMasters, Todd Gillette, Jim Beisman, Jim Mair, Millie Edwards, Lori Tucker and other well-known performers in the Kansas City jazz community. The services feature both sacred and secular music. Jazz services are usually held the last Sunday of each month at the 10:30 service. Please see the calendar section for more information.
The name Blue Notes was actually given to the FLC Jazz Group when it was performing at another Lutheran church in the Kansas City area. Michael Brecke, then pastor of that church, introduced the band and worship leaders to his congregation by saying, “Please welcome the First Lutheran Blue Notes,” and, well, the name stuck. Today however it has come to be more associated with the vocal worship leaders than the musicians. Currently the roster includes Keith Wiedenkeller, Anne Wiedenkeller, Dudley Hogue, and Debra Hohly with occasional member and guest vocalists “singing in.” There are usually four of these singers at any given jazz service.
Together with the choir director, the chancel choir rehearses every Wednesday night at 6:30 pm and performs in the 10:30 am worship service from September to May.
If you enjoy music but are vocally challenged, you may find a place in our bell choir, which plays periodically at the 10:30 am. Sunday Service. Rehearsals are held weekly, September through May on Wednesday nights. Contact Dudley Hogue for more information.
