While each staff member serves a separate function, they share a common desire to meet the members' needs and make First Lutheran a welcoming place to worship.
Meet Phil Vickers, pastor
Pastor Phil Vickers was born and raised in the Mississippi Delta. This is obvious not just because of his accent, but because stories from that time in his life often make it into his sermons. He attended Mississippi State University where he earned a degree in English. He is an avid reader, and literature is a lifelong passion for him. During his time in college he also met his future wife Cheryl. The couple were married their senior years and moved to Columbia, South Carolina, where Pastor Phil attended Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary.
Phil interned at Augsburg Lutheran Church in Winston Salem, North Carolina, where he received wonderful tutelage and mentorship from Pastor Ronald Rinn. Phil’s first daughter, Autumn, was born the day he was supposed to be at seminary graduation.
The couple then moved to the Texas panhandle where Phil was pastor for a short time to a small cattle and farming community. Most of Pastor Phil’s ministry so far was spent in Hutchinson, Kansas, where he was the pastor of family life ministries at Emanuel Lutheran Church. In their seven years in Hutchinson, the Vickers family added Zoe and Sean. Pastor Phil has been serving First Lutheran Church since October of 2015.
Pastor Phil’s passions within the ministry include preaching, teaching, forming and strengthening relationships, and working with small groups. Outside of the Church Pastor Phil enjoys the martial arts, reading, spending time with his wife and family, cooking, doing everything he can to keep his 1985 BMW 735i running, and traveling when possible.
