While each staff member serves a separate function, they share a common desire to meet the members' needs and make First Lutheran a welcoming place to worship.


Meet Michael Brecke, interim pastor

Pastor Michael Brecke was born in Ashland, Wisconsin, in 1946 to Pauline Kaseno and Marvin Brecke. He grew up in Mellen, Wisconsin, and graduated from high school in 1964. He received his B.S. degree from Wisconsin State University River Falls (1968), a Masterʼs of Divinity from Yale University Divinity School (1971), a Masterʼs of Sacred Theology from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis (1972), and a Doctor of Ministry Degree from Luther School of Theology in Chicago (1993).
     His parallel education was received from the Penokee Veneer Mill, Allis Chalmers Foundry, Mellen Weekly Record, and Mellen Country Club where he dug ditches, and held numerous other jobs to make enough money to support his habit of education.
     He entered ordained ministry in the Lutheran Church Missiouri Synod in 1973, and became a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in 1989. He has served churches in Albany, Georgia; Mission, Kansas; Prairie Village, Kansas, and Juddville, Wisconsin.
     He is married to Elizabeth “Betsy” Titterington. Betsy is a Kanas City native and most of her family lives in the larger metropolitan area. He has two children, Matthew and Anna.

     Over the years he has written for several publications, including community newspapers in Albany, Georgia; Kansas City, Missouri; Overland Park, Kansas; and Door County, Wisconsin. He was a frequent contributor to The Echo, a publication effort in conjunction with Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin. The Echo was devoted to telling the stories of our past.



Meet Dudley Hogue, parish assistant

Dudley Hogue has been the Parish Assistant at First Lutheran Church since the fall of 2005. Prior to that, Dudley was the Director of Music & Programs and Director of Music at First Lutheran for seven years. Born and raised in Kansas, Dudley graduated from the University of Kansas with an undergraduate degree in Theatre Education in 1980, and received a graduate degree from Baker University in 1994. Dudley has worked with many not-for-profit organizations, and continues to work and perform in the metropolitan area. Dudley is a member of the FLC Blue Notes.  Dudley and his partner of 29 years, John Carey, live in Prairie Village, Kansas.

Meet Tiffany Johnson, FLEEC director

Tiffany Johnson graduated from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor Degree in Psychology with an emphasis in Early Childhood.

     She joined Zion (Lutheran Church) Preschool in the summer of 2001, working as an assistant teacher for a few years and eventually becoming a lead teacher.

     When that preschool moved to First in 2005 and became First Lutheran Early Education Center (FLEEC), Tiffany remained with the program and became the assistant director in 2011.

     Tiffany says, “I love working with young kids. I love planning the curriculum and teaching children new and exciting things. Kids are so refreshing and eager to learn. One of my favorite parts of teaching is watching their faces when they learn something fascinating to them. They always make me laugh.”

     Outside of FLEEC, Tiffany likes music, movies, reading, and spending time with family and friends. She enjoys playing tennis, watching the Chiefs, and rooting for KU during basketball season.

Meet Nick Brown, director of music NickBrown

Nick Brown has been the Director of Music at First Lutheran Church since March of 2012. He is also currently the K-8 Music Teacher and Tech Assistant at Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy, Nick is a soccer referee with the Heartland Soccer Association.

     Prior to coming to Kansas City, Nick was the Choir Director at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Waterloo, Iowa, while completing his Bachelors of Music Education at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa.

     Nick was raised in Garner, Iowa, and met his wife Liz at Wartburg College. Liz has a Bachelor’s of Religion, and she is a teacher’s aide at Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy. She is going back to school to become a nurse. 

Meet Jordan Buchholtz, keyboardist

Jordan1Jordan Buchholtz is a pianist, organist, accompanist, teacher and writer. As an active performer, she regularly plays in solo piano and chamber music recitals and collaborates with both vocalists and instrumentalists. She enjoys being involved in chamber music ensembles, opera productions, and writing music reviews for KCMetropolis.org.

     Jordan is currently pursuing a MM in Piano Performance at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. She holds a BA in Music Performance from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.  
     Along with her graduate studies, she is a teacher’s assistant to the keyboard division as an instructor for keyboard skills classes and applied piano lessons.
