Transfiguration Sunday

Each and every year, today’s gospel, the Transfiguration story, falls on this Sunday before we begin Lent. Jesus, in today’s reading, appears as he will appear after the Resurrection, glorified before his disciples. And so this scene is like a little Easter before the big one. Lent is bookended by these two images of Jesus in his glory. Today is a joyful reminder of what waits for us on the other side of our Lenten fast. As on Fat Tuesday, the faithful once purged their larders of rich food with one final feast before taking up the fast of Lent, so today we get the alleluias out of our system.
