Third Sunday after Epiphany

Before we get to our geography lesson for this morning and the story of the call of the first disciples, our second lesson for today warrants some special attention, because it’s one of those passages that we wish were not in the Bible and so we generally just pretend that it’s not there. It’s similar to another passage of scripture as Jesus is preparing for his crucifixion when he’s eating his last supper with his disciples in the gospel of John and he tells them that everyone will know that they are his disciples by their love. Jesus makes love the hallmark of discipleship instead of something easier.
