Fourth Sunday after Epiphany


I’m always fascinated when listening to interviews given by athletes and coaches when they’re asked the question, “What do we have to do to win today?” “We have to play physical football!” As opposed to what——metaphysical football? Spiritual football? “We have to get the ball down the field!” Why yes, that does seem to be the general point, doesn’t it? “We have to score a touchdown!” Yes, I know that. And if we scored more touchdowns than our opponents, that would also be to our advantage. As those answers register as surprisingly simple, if true; in today’s gospel, Jesus likewise gives some very surprising answers to the unspoken yet certain question, “What do we have to do to win?” [To hear the entire sermon, click on the arrow above.]
