Seventh Sunday after Pentecost

The comedian Jim Gaffigan looks at his audience and says, “I want you all to be comfortable, so I’d like to talk to you about Jesus.” And the laughter that he gets when he says that highlights a truth even among the faithful, that we sometimes have the desire to keep the things of the faith confined to a certain space and a certain time. The reason it’s okay for me to talk about Jesus right now is that, as good Lutherans, we have all agreed upon it: Only the guy in robes, only for exactly ten minutes, only Sunday morning. But if I were a stranger next to you in line at the QuikTrip, you might not be so ready to receive my message. [To hear the entire sermon, click on the arrow above.]
