In the book of Genesis, there is a strange little story about a tower called Babel. People had grown too powerful, the story goes, and they had gathered together to build a tower up to heaven so as to make their names great. It would be a tower that would symbolize their triumph and their power. And so to prevent his creatures from outgrowing their place in the world, God confused their languages and scattered them abroad on the face of the earth.
