First Sunday of Advent

I’ve become more and more convinced over the last few years that of all the seasons and of all the celebrations that the church does, that the one we enter in today is the most counter cultural. It is certainly counter cultural to celebrate the resurrection on Easter; it’s counter cultural to say that a crucified Jew from Nazareth is the son of God whom death could not hold. It is certainly true that it is counter cultural to give things up like we do during the lenten season rather than collecting more and more. But what makes this season so very counter cultural is its central theme summed up by one word: wait. [To hear the entire sermon, click on the arrow above.]
