Fifth Sunday in Lent

Lent begins with ashes: the ashes of repentance, ashes like those from which the phoenix rises in mythology, ashes like those which Job and the king of Nineveh sat down in, the ashes of their former ways of living. They’re ashes which remind us of the dust from which we were created, which God breathed the breath of life into, and the ashes to which we will return, to remind us to use our God-given time wisely. Lent speaks to us of giving things up, both our sins in repentance and some of our luxuries so that we will have something to share with the poor and to loosen the hold of wealth on our spirit, freeing up more of ourselves for the service of Christ.
