Baptism of Our Lord

In the late 1700s, the captains of sailing vessels began doing a simple yet effective method to make it through difficult waters. They would take down their own country’s flag as it flew upon the mast and replace it with the flag of their enemy, so as to sail unnoticed among them. When the time came for an actual fight however, decorum dictated that even a captain who had been masquerading as the enemy should run up their native flag. And hence in English, we inherit the phrase “He showed his true colors,” meaning that after a time of uncertainty, a situation brought about a demonstration of one’s true character, whether that be bad or good.
