Transfiguration of Our Lord

 

Today, the final Sunday of the Epiphany season, we hear again the wonderful story of the Transfiguration (or metamorphosis in the Greek), as Jesus and three of his disciples go up a mountainside and the disciples are allowed to, for only a brief moment, see a sign which points to the fullness of who Jesus is. He appears in clothes of dazzling white; his countenance is changed before them. It’s a vision of how he will appear in the other gospels after the resurrection. Transfiguration, today’s festival, is also often called “little Easter,” because it is a window onto Christ’s victory and resurrection here before we begin our Lenten journey.
