Second Sunday of Advent

In today’s gospel for this second Sunday of Advent, we first hear a list of names and places. It’s a “who’s who” of rulers, which locates our story during a particular time in history. But we get this list of authorities for another reason besides setting a time frame (and for setting a stumbling block for our lectors). It’s also to remind us that the things we celebrate this season did not come about in a vacuum. Even as God is beginning the good news of Christ by sending John as his herald and precursor, there were other authorities operating. There were other claims upon the world, many of those claims violent and oppressive claims. [To hear the entire sermon, click on the arrow above.]
