Fourth Sunday of Advent

John the Baptizer has been the focus for the readings, our Gospels, for the last few weeks of the season of Advent. And today, we hear about him again as he leaps with joy in his mother’s womb. But today, the other figure who is central to the season of Advent is at the center of what we’re talking about. Mary is a part of the Christmas story, of course, and we find her in our Nativity scenes, cradling the infant Jesus. But before that beautiful scene plays out, Mary is the figure of waiting; she is the figure of expectation and of hope—all of which are hallmarks of the season. The angel Gabriel had announced to her that God had an intention for her life and she had believed and embraced that she would be the mother of God’s Messiah. [To hear the entire sermon, click on the arrow above.]
