Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost

Choose this day whom you will serve. Whether the gods of your ancestors worshipped beyond the river or the god of the Amorites, but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. In Martin Luther’s explanation of the first commandment, he shows us how stories like this one still have meaning for us here today by saying that a god is anything that we give ultimate importance. We might not be tempted to bow down and worship a golden calf or worship the god of the Amorites, but as Luther writes, “Whoever trusts and boasts that he possesses great skill, prudence, power, favor, friendship, and honor has also a god but not this one true God.” [To hear the entire sermon, click on the arrow above.]
