Twenty-fourth Sunday after Pentecost

 

Again with the outer darkness and the weeping and the gnashing of teeth! What now, Jesus? First, some background: Thoughts about money were not the same in the time and place of Jesus as they are in a modern capitalist economy. The ancient people saw wealth as something that was fixed in amount. Wealth was like a pie and everyone had their own piece. And if a man was too wealthy, it was suspect, because the assumption was not that he was a good man of business or an able entrepreneur, but rather that he was taking someone else’s share of the pie dishonestly and uncharitably.
